Canton, NY – Tess Adams scored a pair of goals and
Margret Troiano added a goal and assist as the SUNY Canton women's hockey team earned a 4-2 win against Stevenson University in a crucial Colonial Hockey Conference contest on Friday at the Roos House.
The win improves the Roos to 13-10-1 overall and 7-4-0 in conference play, while the loss drops the Mustangs to 13-10-0 and 7-4-0. Both teams are now tied with Morrisville State College for second place in the conference standings with one game remaining in the regular season on Saturday.
The Roos had a pair of quality opportunities early when Adams and Canton skated in with a 3-on-1 as Adams left a drop-off pass to her left but
Tessa Dobson's shot was saved. Moments later Dobson had another shot hit the left post and bounce out. Neither team found the back of the net as the Roos held a 9-5 shots advantage after one.
Just 3:15 into the middle period Adams was dragged down from behind on a breakaway by a Chelsea Blackburn, earning a penalty shot. She calmly deked left and back to the right slipping the puck through the five-hole of Annie Smyth-Hammond for her team-leading 18th goal of the season.
Three minutes later the Roos doubled their lead when
Jessica Pele won a faceoff at the left circle back to
Sydney Jordan at the point. Jordan's initial shot was turned aside by Smyth-Hammond but
Sydney Kinder jammed home the rebound out in front. Just 32 seconds later Adams collected the puck at the near-boards and found Troiano at the right circle. Her initial shot was saved by Smyth-Hammond but Adams put home the rebound past the stick side for her second of the night.
Stevenson got one back at the 13:58 mark when Maddy Ricci cycled the puck behind the Roo net to Allie Sabatini at the right post. She snuck the puck just inside the right post past the pad of
Brooke Susac. The Roos regained the three-goal advantage two minutes later as
Emily Dolphin dumped the puck into the offensive zone. It deflected off the end boards to Troiano out in front who deked the goaltender from left to right flipping a shot over her blocker for the 4-1 lead. Canton held a 22-17 shots advantage after two.
The Mustangs trimmed the deficit to two at 12:21 of the third when Ricci made a nice play behind the Roos net to knock the puck down and quickly found Allyson Barlow out in front as she beat Susac low past the glove.
Stevenson pulled the goalie late but was whistled for a tripping penalty as Smyth-Hammond was forced to re-enter and the Roos earned the victory. Susac made 28 saves in the win for the Roos, while Smyth-Hammond stopped 23 shots in the loss.
The Roos celebrated Pink the Rink and Breast Cancer Awareness at tonight's contest. Senior captain
Rhea Coad's mother passed away after her battle with breast cancer. Her father Mike dropped the puck as she took the ceremonial puck drop.
These two teams will have a rematch on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Roos House. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on
