Bedborough Nets First Career Goal in Setback at Buffalo State

CHS BOX SCORE

Buffalo, NY – Breanna Bedborough scored her first collegiate goal but the SUNY Canton women's hockey team was unable to survive an Erin Gehen hat trick as host Buffalo State earned a 6-2 win in non-league action on Friday.

The Roos (4-3) got on the board first at 4:59 of the first when Breanna Bedborough slotted her first collegiate goal. The puck was pushed out in front and off the stick of Grace Page to Hannah Brady, who saw her initial shot blocked out in front. Bedborough was in the right spot at the front of the crease putting home the goal for the early lead.

Buffalo State (5-6) knotted the game at one apiece just less than six minutes later when Natasha Steinle lost her stick on a nice defensive play by the Roos but the puck deflected off the skate of Steinle right to Caitie Horvatits who ripped a shot top shelf to beat Brooke Susac over the stick.

The Bengals took their first lead of the game at the 16:24 mark, 24 seconds into a power play opportunity. Susac turned aside an initial shot from Emily DeCock off a redirected shot from Rachel Lenard at the point but Erin Gehen put home the rebound. The hosts took a 2-1 lead into first intermission.

Buffalo State extended its lead to 3-1 at 11:27 of the middle period off a Roos defensive zone turnover.  Olivia Smith picked off the pass just inside her offensive blue line and fired a shot that was saved by Susac. Steinle touched the rebound on to Gehen who put home her second straight score, this one over the pad of Susac. The Bengals held a 25-16 shots advantage and 3-1 lead on the scoreboard after two.

Bri Carroll and Gehen added back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart early in the third period as Gehen completed the hat trick. Emma Ruggiero added her second goal of the season late in the third period shorthanded to extend the lead to 6-1.

Sydney Jordan tallied her fifth of the year on the power play and Ashley Gillies was credited with an assist for the 6-2 final.

Brooke Susac made 26 saves over the first 45:57, while Kristen Caporusso turned aside 10 shots over the final 14:03 in her first action of the season. Bri Gawronski made 22 stops between the pipes for the Bengals.
