Deveny Records First Hat Trick, Roos Fall 5-4 in OT v. Fredonia

Saratoga, NY – Junior Joe Deveny recorded his first collegiate hat trick and four goals on the weekend but it wasn't enough as the SUNY Canton men's hockey team fell just short to Fredonia, 5-4, on Sunday in the consolation game of the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational.

Much like Saturday night the Roos (2-5-0) dominated first period play with a 19-9 shots advantage but it was Fredonia who took a 1-0 lead into first intermission thanks to Jimmy Morgan's third goal of the season at 4:27.

Fredonia (4-4-1) was whistled for a pair of minors at 4:06 of the middle period and 62 seconds later the Roos converted on the 5-on-3 when Bean Beasley set up Vili-Jesper Koivula's second tally of the season. Shortly after their goal a Canton penalty sent the Blue Devils on a power play of their own and with 33 seconds left in the skater advantage Sam Wilbur regained the Fredonia lead at 2-1.

Deveny got his scoring started just 66 second later when Beasley set up his second goal of the night and Deveny's fourth of the season. Mike Freeman gave Fredonia a 3-2 lead after two periods with his goal at 15:19.

Deveny was just getting started as he slotted his second of the night 1:50 into the final period and completed the hat trick at 10:02 giving the Roos their first lead of the game at 4-3.

A Canton slashing penalty at 14:11 proved costly as 67 seconds later Bobby Polacheck converted on the power play to tie the game at four. Each team used a time out over the final four minutes but the teams would skate to overtime.

The Roos outshot Fredonia 3-2 in the extra session but Polachek scored an unassisted goal with 1:09 left to lift the Devils to the win.

Michael Cerasuolo made 33 saves, while Eric Bogart stopped 41 shots for Fredonia as the Roos outshot the opposition, 45-38. Fredonia was 2-for-5 on the power play, while Canton converted just one of their seven attempts.

The men's hockey team is back in action on Friday when it hosts Morrisville State at 7 p.m. in the Roos House. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on Facebook and "following" our Twitter, Instagram and YouTube accounts.
