Roos Push Late as Lamica Scores in USCAA Nationals Opener v. Florida National

Virginia Beach, VA – The SUNY Canton women's soccer team got within one in the final 13 minutes on a Katie Lamica goal but Florida National University scored late to earn a 3-1 win in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National tournament in Virginia Beach on Friday.

Florida National (8-4-2) jumped out to a quick start scoring a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes. D'Yolanda Pineda got the scoring started 3:13 in when she converted off a pass from Jurema Borini. Borini would add her own goal 11 minutes later as the Conquistadors took a 2-0 lead into intermission.

Midway through the second half Florida National continued to control the contest owning an 11-0 shots advantage but the Roos battled tough down the stretch holding an 8-3 shots edge the remainder of the game.

That paid off in the 78th minute when Lamica tallied her second goal of the season to get the Roos within one.

The Roos (6-13-0) needed a tie to keep their hopes alive as only the top team advances from each pool to the semifinals and Florida National had already defeated Bryant & Stratton 2-0 on Thursday. Canton pushed forward looking for the late equalizer, but the Conquistadors added an insurance marker with just 13 seconds remaining sealing the 3-1 victory.

Allison Wakefield made six saves for the Roos, while Savannah Laster turned aside three shots for the Conquistadors.

The women's soccer team will close out its season on Saturday when it takes on Bryant & Stratton College in the second day of USCAA Nationals Pool Play at 10 a.m. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on Facebook and "following" our TwitterInstagram and YouTube accounts.
