Strong Second Half Lifts Hawks Past Men’s Lacrosse in Season Opener

Oneonta, NY – A strong second half gave host Hartwick College a 16-4 win against the visiting SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks (1-1) got off to a quick start scoring four goals in the first quarter, two from the stick of Matt McCallan to open up a four goal lead after 15 minutes of play.

The Roos (0-1) battled back scoring the next four goals of the game to tie it up midway through the second stanza. Jeffrey Perez (Bronx, NY) netted SUNY Canton's first goal of the season just 10 seconds into the quarter after winning the opening faceoff. Kyle Smith (Evans Mills, NY) fed Trenton Yule (Oswego, NY) for his first collegiate goal four minutes later.

Jack Elberty (Canton, NY) slotted his first of the season 5:24 into the period on the man-up opportunity. Skye Sunday (Hogansburg, NY) followed netting his first collegiate goal with 7:20 to play in the first half to draw the Roos even.

Hartwick regained the momentum scoring three times in the final 2:56 of the half to take a 7-4 lead into intermission.
SUNY Canton struggled to get the offense going in the second half as Hartwick outscored the Roos 9-0 after halftime en route to the 16-4 victory.

Kody Koscis (Brasher Falls, NY) made nine saves in his first collegiate start for SUNY Canton, while Mike Rourke also turned aside nine shots in the win. Connor O'Brien made two saves in relief.

The men's lacrosse team returns to action Wednesday for a neutral site contest in Binghamton, NY v. Farmingdale State College.
