Castleton, VT – The SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team trailed by just one goal at intermission but a strong second half from host Castleton earned the Spartans a 14-6 victory on Tuesday.
The Roos (3-4), coming into today's contest off three consecutive wins, scored a pair of goals from the sticks of
Devin Gruneisen (Potsdam, NY) and
Cam Carter (Colonie, NY) over the final two minutes of the second quarter to get SUNY Canton within 5-4 at intermission.
Kyle Smith (Evans Mills, NY) slotted a pair of goals off passes from
Trenton Yule (Oswego, NY) and
Chris Gamble (Carthage, NY) to give the Roos an early 2-1 lead with 1:48 remaining in the first quarter. Castleton caged the next four goals of the contest to open up a 5-2 Spartan lead with 4:08 left in the opening half.
The Spartans (4-3) netted the first five goals of the second half while holding SUNY Canton scoreless in the third period to open up a 9-4 advantage on its way to the eight goal victory.
Smith led the offense with two goals and one assists, while Yule and Gamble posted a goal and assist each.
Zack Opiela (Canandaigua, NY) was a force defensively with a game-high five caused turnovers. Smith and
Andrew Bowes (Irondequoit, NY) paced the team with four ground balls apiece.
Kody Kocsis (Brasher Falls, NY) had another strong outing making 19 saves, while Peter Latulippe made 10 stops for Castleton. Kyle Lutinski, Tom Pardew and Zach Devoid led the Spartans with two goals each, while Lutinski added a pair of assists.
