SUNY Canton Celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton Athletics department celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day on February 13th at its home women's hockey contest v. Johnson & Wales University.

The women's hockey team invited the Canton Blades, a local youth girl's hockey team to its game. Following that contest and the women's basketball game all SUNY Canton female student-athletes along with the Canton Blades and other area girls youth present gathered together on the ice to be honored for their participation in athletics.

"This is a day to celebrate female athletes and a time to remember how women fought for many years for their right to compete in athletics," said Teresa Minckler, Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator. "We hope our student-athletes recognize that playing sports is an incredible opportunity, and it's one that women didn't always have," she continued. "It is important for us as an institution to recognize our own female student-athletes and their accomplishments. They work hard every day and we want to let them know we are proud of them."
