Canton, NY – Visiting Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences scored in the 33rd minute and a late push from the SUNY Canton men's soccer came up just short as they dropped a 1-0 decision on Sunday afternoon.
Neither team found the back of the net in the opening 30 minutes but the visiting Panthers got on the board in the 33rd minute off a Roos turnover in their defensive third. Kyle Jenkins picked off a pass and found Mina Girgis in the center at the top of the box. Girgis faked a shot and slid the ball to his right beating Roo keeper
Mouhammed Thiam (New York, NY) into the lower left corner. ACPHS (7-3-1) took the 1-0 lead into intermission.
With just less than 30 minutes to play the Roos (1-9-1) had a great scoring chance when
Erdous Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) hit a low bending shot toward the right side of net but Panther keeper Matt Houlihan made a nice play diving to his left to make the save.
With seven minutes remaining SUNY Canton had a golden chance for the equalizer.
Kyle Smith (Evans Mills, NY) took a corner kick from the near corner that found
Mouhamadou Cisse (Sacre Coeur, Dakar, Senegal) who redirected a beautiful header that struck just off the top of the crossbar.
With three minutes remaining Cisse had another header this time off a cross from
Edward Malinoski, Jr. (Evans Mills, NY) but Houlihan was up to the task making the save at the right post. Moments later Thiam made a big save at the other end on a shot from Zak Giorgi.
Thiam made three stops in net for the Roos, while Houlihan turned aside three shots for Albany Pharmacy. SUNY Canton held an 18-11 edge in shots in the competition.
