Canton, NY – Kyle Smith (Evans Mills, NY) scored his third goal of the season and
Mouhammed Thiam (New York, NY) made seven saves in his second straight shutout as the SUNY Canton men's soccer team earned a 1-0 win against visiting Utica College on Wednesday evening.
The Roos (6-9-1), winners of five straight, scored the eventual game-winner in the 59th minute when
Erdous Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) found
Demba Ba (Cambria Heights, NY) on the left side just across midfield. Ba delivered a ball that found its way through the Pioneer defense to the foot of Smith who beat the keeper into the right side for his third goal of the season.
SUNY Canton's first good opportunity came 3:30 into the game when
Tyler Cook (Antwerp, NY) one hopped a shot off a direct kick but Matthew Milograno made the save. The Pioneers had a great chance three minutes later when Marcel Dupuis was one-on-one but fired a shot right at Thiam who made the stop from close range.
The teams headed into halftime scoreless as the Pioneers (2-11-1) held a slight 3-1 shots on goal edge as neither team had many quality scoring opportunities in the first half.
In the 61st minute Dzenan Racic had a great chance for the visitors but Thiam came out charging to make a terrific save with his feet. Lebron nearly added an insurance marker two minutes later when his head off a Cook corner went just wide of the right post.
Thiam made some huge saves down the stretch finishing with four in the second half and seven overall as he improved to 6-3-0 on the season. Milograno recorded one save in the loss for Utica.
