Josh Sova (Oswego, NY),
Ben Beasley (Burlington, ON) and
Brett Costello (Lombardy, ON) combined for eight points as SUNY Canton scored three unanswered goals to secure a 4-2 victory against visiting Stonehill College on Saturday night in the Roos House.
The Skyhawks (5-8-3) got on the board first at 6:06 of the first as Thomas DePoalo converted his fourth goal of the season off a scrum in front of net. Despite the teams registering 12 shots apiece in the opening period the visitors took a 1-0 lead after one.
SUNY Canton (3-12-2) had a great scoring opportunity 7:35 into the middle period when
George Curry (Schaumburg, IL) put a one-timer toward the right post but Patrick Farrington made a great glove save to keep the Skyhawks on top.
The Roos got on the board at 9:12 of the period when Sova sniped a shot top shelf over the blocker from the right faceoff circle. Costello and Beasley earned helpers on the play. SUNY Canton controlled the second period owning a 13-4 edge in shots.
SUNY Canton took their first lead of the game just 49 seconds into the final period when
Tyler Ralph (Middletown, NJ) buried a rebound off an initial shot from
Thomas Crabtree (Knoxville, TN). Beasley also earned an assist on the score.
The Roos extended their lead to 3-1 just 13 seconds into a power play opportunity as Sova buried his second of the night top shelf over the blocker on a shot across the face of goal.
Eric Witzel (Ottawa, ON) and Costello earned helpers on the goal.
The Skyhawks got back within one at 6:34 when Robbie Dorgan netted his third of the year with the skater advantage on a shot over the shoulder of
Josh Erickson (Woodbury, MN). Travis Army and Brian Higgins were credited with assists on the play.
With 11:30 left in the game Erickson made a huge save on a 1-on-0 situation. SUNY Canton quickly responded as
Nick Lepone (Richmondhill, ON) nearly scored on a wrap-around shot and
Joey Vocino's (Pickering, ON) follow-up shot was also saved.
Beasley sealed the game with a snipe with just 1:12 remaining as Costello and Wiztel set up the goal that wrapped up the win for SUNY Canton.
Josh Erickson made 25 saves in his second win of the season, while Farrington made 36 stops for the Skyhawks as SUNY Canton outshot Stonehill 40-27.
The Roos special team units paid off as they went 3-for-8 on the power play, while the Skyhawks were 1-for-6 with the skater advantage.
