Oswego, NY – The SUNY Canton men's soccer team looked to make a late comeback but came up short as host Oswego State earned a 3-1 victory on the opening day of their home tournament Friday afternoon.
The Roos owned a 6-5 shots edge in the opening half but neither team could find the back of the net as they played to a scoreless tie at intermission.
The Lakers (1-1) struck first in the 66th minute when Bernard Kofey intercepted a pass and beat a defender burying the shot to make it 1-0. Just 66 seconds later Kofey set up Nick Zingaro who put Oswego State up by two. With 11:30 left to play RJ Nichol found Andrew Moorman on a cross who added an insurance marker.
After a defensive foul in the box in the 83rd minute captain
Hunter Mowery (Elizabethtown, NY) calmly stepped up and buried a penalty kick to get the Roos within two. However, Oswego State locked down defensively to close out the 3-1 victory.
The men's soccer team will face Houghton College on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the consolation game of the Oswego State Tournament. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on
