Abington, PA – The SUNY Canton baseball team used a strong group pitching performance and a 2 RBI single from
Seth Douglas (Reedsburg, WI) to split a doubleheader with host Penn State Abington on Sunday.
Game 1Neither team plated a run in the first six innings of action in what proved to be a pitcher's duel. The Roos loaded the bases with one out in the second but an infield pop out and strike out ended the frame. Again in the fifth SUNY Canton threatened with a pair of runners in scorers position but a line out ended the inning.
The Roos broke through in the seventh.
Matt Hall (Palmyra, NY) pinch hit and led off with a walk.
Christian Nazario-Cruz (Naguabo, Puerto Rico) singled to left field and Douglas followed with a 2 RBI base hit to center field.
SUNY Canton used five pitchers who combined for a three hit shut out.
Zach Lawrence (West Palm Beach, FL) got the start throwing three innings without giving up a hit and struck out four.
Derek Harkin (Ottawa, ON) walked one and surrendered one hit in an inning, while
Dom Deliberti (Staten Island, NY) gave up no hits with a strike out in the fifth.
John Mancini (Scotia, NY) sprinkled a hit and walk over the sixth inning earning the win, while
Travis Bigelow (Ottawa, ON) struck out two and gave up a hit to pick up the save in the seventh.
Game 2The Lions got off to a quick start on an RBI triple down the right field line in the first.
Brandon Welch (Constable, NY) knotted the game at one placing a base hit down the right field line to score
Jeremy Baez (Bronx, NY). Baez added an RBI of his own in the third on a sacrifice fly to right to score
Jesse Barton (Belle Glade, FL), giving SUNY Canton a 2-1 lead.
Abington (18-19) plated two on an RBI single and an error in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. The Roos (12-28) went down in order in the seventh as the Lions held on for the win.
Five pitchers took the mound for SUNY Canton again in the nightcap.
Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) tookt he no-decision giving up three hits and one earned in 3.0 innings. Mancini took the loss allow two runs, one earned, in one-third of an inning.
