Strong Second Half Comeback Falls Short vs. Mustangs

Box Score

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's basketball team battled back from a 15 point second half deficit to take the lead late but fell just short, 72-68, to visiting Morrisville State College on Sunday afternoon at the Roos House.

The Mustangs (11-14) led 42-27 after a Joe Hulbert three-pointer 4:23 into the second half. The Roos chipped away at the lead over the next eight minutes and took their first lead of the game at 52-50 after Romario Fletcher (Queens, NY) knocked down a pair of free throws.

SUNY Canton took their largest lead of the game at seven points (60-53) after Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) connected from behind the arc with 5:08 remaining. The triple capped a 33-11 run over a span of 10:29 as the Roos stormed back much to the delight of the Roos House crowd.

Morrisville State responded using a 12-0 spurt of its own while holding SUNY Canton scoreless for a 3:24 stretch. Trailing by five with 1:16 remaining Fletcher converted an old-fashioned three-point play to get the hosts within two. The Mustangs went 7-for-10 from the charity stripe in the final 1:10 to earn the four-point victory.

Annorh led the Roos with 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Fletcher posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to go with his game-high five blocked shots. Vonallen Pickett (Brooklyn, NY) was extremely efficient with 12 points and nine rebounds on 5-for-6 shooting. Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) also finished in double figures with 12 points.

The Roos held the edge in points in the paint (40-24), points off turnovers (22-8), fast break points (18-2) and bench points (34-9). Both teams struggled shooting 35 percent from the floor but Morrisville got a big lift on its shooting from deep going 7-for-15.

Ibrahima Toure led all players with 21 points to go with nine rebounds for the Mustangs. Joe Hulbert (18) and Trent Ward (15) also scored in double figures for Morrisville.

The Roos honored their three seniors: Tyler Ellison, Scott Bartenstein and Xzavier Fisher prior to today's contest. This concludes the regular season for SUNY Canton. They will wait to see if they are offered a post-season bid from either the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) or the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).
