Box ScoreManchester, NH -- The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team scored three goals each in the second and third periods to close out the 2014-15 season with a convincing 7-4 win against host Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday afternoon at the Ice Den. Four different players found the back of the net for the first time in 2014-15.
Jordan Grimsley (Palmetto, FL) scored his first goal of the year and seniors
Dave Ferris (Saratoga Springs, NY) and
Logan McDougall (Saranac Lake, NY) went out with a bang each finding the back of the net for the first time this season in their final collegiate games.
John Humphrey got the scoring started for the hosts at 9:03 of the first with the skater advantage. Despite being on the penalty kill with 1:05 remaining in the opening frame SUNY Canton responded when
Thomas Crabtree (Knoxville, TN) lit the lamp for the second time in his career giving the Roos just their second short-handed tally of the season.
Tyler Ralph (Middletown, NJ) earned a helper on the play.
The Penmen (10-12-2) regained the goal advantage 28 seconds into a power play, their second extra attacker goal of the game. The Roos hung tough when
Josh Sova (Oswego, NY) helped the SUNY Canton power play unit convert for the first time in the game off passes from
George Curry (Schaumburg, IL) and McDougall to knot the score at two.
Eric Witzel (Ottawa, ON) added his team-leading 13th goal of the season off the set-up from
Brett Costello (Lombardy, ON) at 11:43 of the second. Less than four minutes later a pair of seniors hooked up as McDougall fed Ferris for his first goal of the year. SUNY Canton took a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.
SUNY Canton scored two straight in a 30 second span early in the third as Ralph and Grimsley both beat the opposing goaltender to give the Roos a convincing 6-2 lead.
The Penmen continued to fight as Anthony Laperriere and Dane Caracino converted back-to-back tallies to get within 6-4 with just over five minutes remaining. SNHU pulled the goaltender late with a two-goal deficit but Ralph found McDougall who hit the open net for his first goal of the season to go out in style.
Christopher Marsillo (Lincroft, NJ) stopped 29 shots in his second collegiate win for SUNY Canton, while Ryan Slatky turned aside 24 shots for Southern New Hampshire.
Special teams accounted for nine of the 11 goals in the contest as the Roos went 3-for-6 on the power play and also added two short-handed tallies. Meanwhile the Penmen were 4-for-12 with the skater advantage.
