Rosen & Lepone Score as Roos Close out Weekend with 3-2 Overtime Loss to Mustangs

CHS BOX SCORE

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team dominated shots owning a 42-16 edge, but visiting Morrisville State College made its chances count earning a 3-2 overtime victory on Saturday evening in the Roos House.

The Mustangs (2-9-1) got on the board first 2:55 into the opening period after the Roos struggled to clear the puck from their defensive zone. Ian Wood circled behind the net from right to left and lifted the puck high over Louie Puig (Chicago, IL) for the early lead.

The Roos (2-8-2) responded at 8:39, 25 seconds two minutes of 4-on-4 action. Josh Sova (Oswego, NY) skated into the offensive zone on the left side down toward the corner on the near boards and played a precise pass goal mouth for Dylan Rosen (Clarkston, MI) who buried a one-timer just over the stick of Steven Dombrosky. SUNY Canton held a 13-6 shots on goal advantage as the teams were tied after one.

Morrisville struck quick once again in the second period as Layne Martin scored his first of the season at 1:27 off passes from Jordan Carvalho and David Landau. SUNY Canton dominated the period owning a 14-1 shots on goal edge but the Mustangs made their one shot count to take the one-goal lead into second intermission.

SUNY Canton knotted the score at two with 3:52 remaining as Sova circled behind the net left to right and found a cutting Nick Lepone (Richmondhill, ON) in the slot who put the puck past the glove of Dombrosky to tie the game. One minute later Kasey Kulczycki (Laval, QUE) saw his shot clang off the left post as the teams skated into overtime.

Lepone had an early shot in overtime off a one-timer on a cross-ice pass but Dombrosky made the save. CJ Stubbs was the hero for the Mustangs as a defensive zone turnover resulted in Stubbs with the puck one-on-one with Puig as he lifted a shot top shelf for the victory 54 seconds into OT.

Dombrosky made 40 saves in goal for the Mustangs, while Puig stopped 13 shots for SUNY Canton. The Roos held a huge 42-16 shots on goal edge in the contest and 36-30 edge in the faceoff circle. The teams combined to go 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

The men's hockey team returns to the ice next Saturday when it hosts Johnson & Wales University at 3 p.m. in the Roos House. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on Facebook and "following" our TwitterInstagram and YouTube accounts.
