Cortland Uses Late Rally to Earn 2-1 Win v. Men’s Soccer

Canton, NY – SUNY Cortland scored a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes to earn a 2-1 victory v. the SUNY Canton men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon.

The Roos controlled play in the opening half owning an advantage in shots (7-4), shots on goal (4-1) and corner kicks (1-0). Devin Gruneisen (Potsdam, NY) led the way with two shots on target, while Nick Escalante (Whittier, CA) and Edward Malinoski, Jr. (Evans Mills, NY) each had one shot on goal.

SUNY Canton (4-13-0) broke through with just 1:42 remaining in the opening half. Jose Menendez (Maracay, Venezeula) controlled the ball on the Cortland side of midfield sending a through ball to Escalante. The senior from California buried his team-leading fifth goal of the season on a left-footed shot into the right corner. The Roos took a 1-0 lead into intermission.

Cortland (11-4-2) came out of intermission controlling the ball over the first 20 minutes of the second half, much like the Roos had during the opening 45.
With 24 minutes remaining in regulation Jordan Barriere (Chazy, NY) placed a great shot in the upper right corner but Red Dragon keeper Joe Brandofino was able to make a nice save to keep it a one score game.

The Red Dragons knotted the score at 1-1 with just 9:31 remaining in the contest. Daniel Friend made a great individual effort firing a shot from well outside the box into the right corner on his sixth goal of the season.

Minutes later Patrick Anunziatta (Schenectady, NY) made a great diving save on a Nick Tata shot diving to his left but Andrew Brown put home the rebound with 3:29 to play for the eventual game-winner.

Anunziatta finished with seven saves in the contest, while Brandofino turned aside five shots for the Red Dragons.

The Roos honored their six seniors Jordan Barriere, Tyler Gallagher, Hunter Mowery, Jose Menendez, Devin Gruneisen and Nick Escalante at halftime of today's match.
