Strong Start Lifts Salve Regina Past Women’s Hockey

Host Salve Regina University used four goals in the second period on its way to a 7-1 victory against the SUNY Canton women's ice hockey team on Friday evening.
 
After a scoreless first half of the opening period the host Seahawks (9-6-1) scored four times over the final 9:37 of the first period to take a 4-0 lead into intermission. Four different players found the back of the net for the hosts.
 
Neither team was able to put the puck past the opposing goaltender in the second period Salve Regina made it 5-0 at 10:18 of the third on Briana D'Avolio's second goal of the game.
 
Steph Kushnir (Goshen, NY) made a great play on the puck on a shot out in front but Colleen Marcik made a tremendous save to stymie the assistant captain of her first goal of the season. The Roos (2-19-1) got on the board at 11:51 of the final frame. Kjrstin Hoberg (Grand Forks, ND) had an initial shot that was saved by the goalie but the rebound went right to Lora Ardoin (Houston, TX) on the doorstep who put it home for her team-leading eight goal of the season. Lindsey Hall (Ancaster, ON) also earned a helper on the play.
 
Michaela Chiuccariello added a pair of third period goals for the Seahawks to complete the hat trick after scoring Salve Regina's first goal of the game. Rebecca DiNardo (Ottawa, NY) made 19 saves over 18:16 before Peyton Stafne (St. Louis Park, MN) stopped 36 shots over the final 41:44. Marcik made 12 saves for Salve Regina, while Nicole Grosser stopped one shot in relief.
