Boston, MA – Rhea Coad (Wheatfield, NY) scored her first goal in her first game of the season as the women's ice hockey team was within a goal a majority of the contest before two late scores gave host UMass Boston a 4-1 victory on Friday afternoon.
After a fairly even first period and some quality opportunities for the Roos on the power play the Beacons got on the board first at the 15:43 mark. Kayla Smith fired a backhanded shot through the five hole of Roo goaltender
Rebecca DiNardo (Ottawa, ON). Michaela Faia was credited with an assist on the play.
SUNY Canton finished with 11 shots in the opening period as
Sydney Kinder (New York, NY),
Margret Troiano (Morristown, NY),
Lora Ardoin (Houston, TX),
Abbey Diabo (Kahnawake, QUE) and
Lindsey Hall (Ancaster, ON) all had two shots on goal each. DiNardo made 12 stops in the frame.
The Roos found the equalizer 3:33 into the second. A Beacon miscue in the neutral zone gave Coad a tremendous opportunity.
Grace Lyon (Brasher Falls, NY) picked up the puck near the blue line and found Coad who had her initial shot in the slot saved by Moe Bradley. The puck rebounded right to Coad who quickly placed a one-timer past the stick of Bradley.
Kat Armstrong put the hosts back on top at the 11:47 mark with the skater advantage. Armstrong used a toe drag around blue line to create space and fired a low laser to the blocker side just inside the post. Suzanne Meek and Samantha Fallon were credited with assists on the play. The Beacons led 2-1 after two as DiNardo stopped 14 key shots in the middle period.
After much of the third period was scoreless the Roos had a golden 5-on-3 opportunity that was set to last 1:34 after a pair of Beacon penalties. However, that two-skater advantage would only last 41 seconds as the Roos were whistled for a penalty with 4:35 remaining.
With just 2:58 remaining in the game UMass Boston had a 41 second power play opportunity of its own and that paid off as they found the back of the net off a faceoff win in the right circle. Kelsey Maclsaac took a wrister from the point that found its way through traffic and the five-hole of DiNardo.
The Beacons added an insurance marker with 1:22 remaining off the stick of Michaela Faia for the 4-1 victory. DiNardo stopped 36 shots in goal for the Roos, while Bradley turned aside 20 shots for the Beacons. UMass Boston went 2-for-3 with the skater advantage, while SUNY Canton was 0-for-4 on the power play.
Troiano led the Roos with four shots on goal and went 21-for-37 in the circle. Diabo and Ardoin tallied two shots apiece. The women's hockey team will play the loser of Stevenson University and Chatham University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation game of the 8th Codfish Bowl.
