Cortland, NY – The SUNY Canton women's ice hockey team used a spirited team effort as five different players registered a point in a 3-1 road victory against SUNY Cortland on Tuesday afternoon.
Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) led the way with a goal and two assists, while back-up goaltender Becca (Lee Center, NY) Kieffer recorded her first career point. After falling behind early the Roos (2-16-1) used three unanswered scores to secure the victory.
The Red Dragons (2-8-1) got the scoring started at 15:10 of the first on her second of the season off passes from Niamh O'Connor and Makenzie Wright. SUNY Canton responded with an important equalizer just 24 ticks before the end of the opening period as
Lindsey Hall (Ancaster, ON) lit the lamp for the second time in as many games. Kieffer was credited with her first collegiate helper on the play, while Carroll picked up the second assist.
Sophomore captain
Lora Ardoin (Houston, TX) netted what would be the eventual game-winner at the 14:07 mark of the second stanza, 10 seconds into a Roo power play.
Margret Troiano (Morristown, NY) and Carroll were responsible for the set-up on the play.
Clinging to a 2-1 lead the SUNY Canton penalty kill came up huge in the final frame going 3-for-3. The Red Dragons pulled Kelly Farinella with 50 seconds remaining looking for the equalizer. Freshman goaltender
Rebecca DiNardo (Ottawa, ON) made two key saves and following an Ardoin faceoff win SUNY Canton made Cortland pay as Carroll deposited the puck into the empty net with 13 seconds remaining for the 3-1 final.
DiNardo put up a big effort between the pipes stopping 32 of the 33 shots she faced on the afternoon. Farinella made three saves after replacing Deanna Meunier, who made 12 stops while yielding the first two goals.
