Canton, NY – Captain
Hunter Mowery (Elizabethtown, NY) scored once and assisted another goal as the SUNY Canton men's soccer team defeated Clarkson University, 2-0, on Wednesday evening in Canton.
The Roos developed a number of great scoring opportunities in the opening half. The first chance came 15 minutes in off a set piece when
Jordan Barriere (Chazy, NY) delivered a bending ball towards the far post.
Jose Menendez (Maracay, Venezuela) ran onto it tipping it just wide of the right post.
SUNY Canton got on the board 20:11 into the game when
Devin Gruneisen (Potsdam, NY) delivered a pass to Mowery in the midfield. Mowery dribbled toward the top of the 18 and made a quick cut from left to right blasting a shot into the lower right corner of the net to make it 1-0.
Three minutes later the Roos were on the attack again as
Nick Escalante (Whittier, CA) drilled a ball from 26 yards out just left of the far post. SUNY Canton held a 6-3 shots and 3-2 shots on goal advantage in the opening half.
After halftime SUNY Canton continued to control play. The Roos broke through for a critical insurance marker with just over 13 minutes remaining. Mowery drilled a shot from the top of the box that was saved by Golden Knight keeper Michael King. The ball rebounded right to Escalante in front of the net who beat the King from point blank range into the left corner of the net.
SUNY Canton continued to put pressure on the Golden Knights as
Ricardo Eugenio (Mamaroneck, NY) played a pretty ball in from the right sideline to Gruneisen who headed it just wide of goal.
The Roos controlled shots (17-7) and shots on goal (5-3) in the contest.
Patrick Anunziatta (Schenectady, NY) stopped three shots in his first career shutout for the Roos. Meanwhile, King turned aside two shots for Clarkson.
