Potsdam, NY – In a game of runs it was SUNY Canton who outscored Alfred State College 9-2 after halftime en route to a 16-11 victory Sunday afternoon in a neutral site game on the campus of Clarkson University.
SUNY Canton scored the contest's first two goals as
Jack Keenan (Brasher Falls, NY) and
Chris Gamble (Carthage, NY) netted back-to-back markers to make it 2-0 Roos. The Pioneers responded with consecutive scores to know it at two apiece. The Roos closed out the first quarter with three goals in the final 1:54 including a pair of tallies with the extra attacker in the closing 43 seconds to take a commanding, 5-2 lead after 15 minutes of play.
The teams traded a pair of goals in the first eight minutes of the second quarter as
Tanner Pratt (Canton, NY) and Gamble slotted shots past Pioneer goalie Jonathan Caton into the back of the cage. With SUNY Canton owning a 7-4 lead it was Alfred State who closed the half with five consecutive scores to take a 9-7 advantage into intermission. Gamble led the Roos with three scores in the opening half, while Pratt added two.
SUNY Canton controlled play scoring all five third period goals to turn a two-goal deficit into a three-point lead. Pratt fed
Jason Thompson (Massena, NY) for his third goal of the season before back-to-back tallies from Keenan helped the Roos regain the lead on the scoreboard. Pratt closed the third quarter with his third and fourth goals of the game and eight seconds into the final frame added his fifth of the day.
The Roos beat Caton three more times in the game to stifle any Alfred State comeback attempt. SUNY Canton made a living scoring seven times on 14 man-up opportunities, while the Pioneers were just 2-for-13 with the extra attacker.
SUNY Canton held a 32-25 edge in shots on goal and went 16-for-28 in the face-off circle.
Corey Spuck (Rochester, NY) made14 saves for the second consecutive game for his first win of the season. Caton turned aside 16 shots in the loss for the Pioneers.
