Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team scored two first period goals on its way to a 2-2 overtime tie against visiting Franklin Pierce University on Friday evening at the Roos House. SUNY Canton celebrated Zach Hamilton and Senior Night.
The Roos (5-14-3) got on the board first as
Joe Casale (Niagara Falls, NY) fed the puck to
Jordan Grimsley (Palmetto, FL) just outside the left faceoff circle. Grimsley laced a wrister over the stick of Kyle Moran for his first goal of the season to make it 1-0 at the 6:43 mark.
With time winding down in the first period senior captain
Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, CA) skated behind the net and around the right side finding a cutting
Nick Vasilopoulos (Montreal, QUE) on the left side. Vasilopoulos beat Moran for the two-goal lead after 20 minutes of play.
The Ravens (4-15-3) trimmed the deficit to one 2:07 into the second period when Bryan Colella fed Matt Batis who lifted a shot over the right shoulder of
Morgan Barr (Almonte, ON) to make it 2-1. Franklin Pierce committed three straight penalties giving the Roos an extended 5-on-3 opportunity but SUNY Canton was unable to find the back of the net on the power play opportunity.
Franklin Pierce added a second score at the 12:58 mark of the frame when Tyler Cornele netted his seventh marker of the season beating Barr over the stick side. Shane Dowd and Brendan Glynn assisted the score to make it 2-2. With just over three minutes remaining in the second Franklin Pierce's Connor Mauro skated in on a breakaway but Barr stymied the shot attempt to keep the score tied after two.
SUNY Canton controlled the third period outshooting the Ravens 15-4. Neither team was able to find the back of the net, as the teams would skate into the extra session. The Roos held a 41-28 shots advantage through three periods.
The teams combined for five shots in the extra session but neither offense could beat the opposing goaltenders as the game ended in a tie. Barr made 28 saves between the pipes for the Roos, while Moran stopped 42 shots for the Ravens.
SUNY Canton honored Giczewski, its lone senior and captain, just before the second period. These two teams will have a rematch Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at the Roos House. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on
