Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's soccer team scored two goals in the second half and held off visiting SUNY Polytechnic Institute 2-1 on Friday evening in Canton.
 
Both defenses controlled play in the opening half in a physical game as the teams combined for three shots on goal, 15 fouls and four yellow cards. The teams went into intermission locked at a 0-0 tie.
 
Fifteen minutes into the second half the Roos broke through as Nick Escalante (Whittier, CA) played a through ball up the middle to Hunter Mowery (Elizabethtown, NY), who calmly put it past the charging Wildcat keeper with a low powerful strike into the right corner of the net.
 
The Roos continued to control play in the second half and added what would prove to be a crucial insurance marker on a beautiful play. Devin Gruneisen (Potsdam, NY) made a nifty turn near the top of the 18-yard mark and played Josh Geller (Monroe, NY) in on the right side. Geller crossed a beautiful ball to the far left post where Escalante headed home his 13th goal of the season.
 
Bryan Kilpatrick added a goal with 3:11 left in regulation to get the Wildcats within one but the Roos defense held them off for the 2-1 victory. Escalante and Abdulai Jagana (Bronx, NY) led the Roos with four and two shots on goal, respectively.
 

Patrick Anunziatta (Schenectady, NY) stopped six shots in net for SUNY Canton, while Jesse Yanaarella made six saves for SUNY Poly. The Roos held a 15-11 advantage in shots including a 12-7 mark in the second half.
 
The Roos wore pink jerseys to spread awareness for breast cancer during tonight's game and the women's volleyball team sold T-shirts for $10 each to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The men's soccer team is back in action on Sunday when it travels crosstown to take on St. Lawrence University at 2:00 p.m.
