Canton, NY – Freshman goalkeeper
Patrick Anunziatta (Schenectady, NY) had a career day making 11 saves as the Roos dropped a highly competitive game to one of the nation's best teams falling 1-0 to host St. Lawrence University on Sunday afternoon.
The Saints, who are ranked 13th in the nation in NCAA Division III, scored early as Seyefe Brouk dropped a pass off to Rob Brandell who teed up a strike from 30 yards out that beat Anunziatta into the upper right corner for the only goal of the game in the 18th minute.
Nick Escalante (Whittier, CA) had one of the few quality scoring opportunities for the Roos in the 59th minute. The play came off a set piece from 20 yards as he bent a low shot around a Saint wall but keeper Sean Houston made the stop and was able to collect the ball without allowing a rebound.
Escalante nearly knotted the game with three minutes remaining as he sent what appeared to be a cross on a tough angle from the left side. The ball sailed high over Houston and off the top of the crossbar and back into play but was safely cleared away by the Saints.
Jose Menendez (Maracay, Venezuela) registered the only other shot on goal for the Roos as St. Lawrence controlled that stat line with a 12-1 advantage in the game. The host Saints also held a 12-1 edge in corner kicks.
Anunziatta played an extraordinary game for SUNY Canton making 11 stops and punching away numerous free kick and corner kick opportunities. Houston turned aside two shots for the Saints. The loss snaps the Roos five match unbeaten streak, while SLU extends their winning streak to eight games.
