Roos Battle Late to Down Badgers in Overtime

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's basketball team outscored visiting Johnson State 13-8 in overtime en route to a 92-87 victory Wednesday night at the Roos House.

Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) and Tyler Ellison (New York, NY) combined for nine points in the extra session. Ellison started overtime with a strong basket inside but Asim Khan responded with a dribble drive for Johnson State to tie it at 81. Kam Peterkin (Harlem, NY) knifed his way into the paint and drained a jumper. Once again the Badgers retorted with a Bryan Hickey lay-up.

Annorh scored three straight points; one at the line and the other on a fast break lay-up but Khan hit both of his free throws with 1:15 remaining to get within 86-85. Ellison and Annorh combined to make four straight from the charity stripe opening the lead to 90-85 and securing the Roo victory.

Annorh led all players with a career-high 29 points shooting 5-for-8 from beyond the arc to go with his game-high nine assists. Ellison and Scott Bartenstein (Potsdam, NY) each posted 16 points, while Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) finished with his third double-double of the season tallying 13 points and 12 rebounds.

SUNY Canton led by as many as 15 early in the second half but visiting Johnson State chipped away throughout the stanza. The Roos continued to lead by eight points with 36 seconds remaining in regulation after a pair of hits from the line by Annorh. Khan hit two free throws and after a SUNY Canton turnover Khan responded with an old-fashioned three-point play that all of a sudden had Johnson State within just three at 78-75 with 23 seconds to play.

Annorh missed two crucial attempts from the line and Lester Alexander converted a pair on the other end to make it 78-77 SUNY Canton. Fouled once again, the Roo freshman point guard split from the line and Lester knotted the game at 79 with six seconds left in regulation as the game headed to overtime.

Tyler Ellison makes a strong move beating Bryan Hickey inside.
Khan paced the Badgers with 26 points, 17 of which came after halftime, while Hickey added 21 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Alexander and Ron Adrian chipped in with 17 and 14 points, respectively.
