Fletcher Records First Double-Double Against Gators

Box Score

Albany, NY – Romario Fletcher (Queens, NY) posted his first collegiate double-double on Tuesday, but a late second half push by the men's basketball team came up short as they fell, 89-79, to host Sage Colleges.

The game was back-and-forth early as the teams were tied at 7-7 and 9-9, but the host Gators used a 13-3 run to open up a 22-13 advantage after a Brett Ullman layup. Sage (10-5) took a 47-32 lead at halftime.

Four different Gators had seven or more points in the opening half. Fletcher paced SUNY Canton (2-10) with nine points and four rebounds while Scott Bartenstein (Potsdam, NY) netted seven points shooting 3-for-4 from the field. Sage shot 54 percent from the field, while the Roos hit on 38 percent of their field goals. The teams were even with 23 rebounds apiece.

The Gators opened their lead to 14 at 67-53 with 10:27 remaining. The Roos used a 6-0 run sparked by Rashad Richardson (Rochester, NY), who scored four straight points from the free throw line including a block and rebound on the defensive end. After a pair of hits from the charity stripe by Xzavier Fisher (Brooklyn, NY), SUNY Canton was within eight at 67-59.

Sage responded with a basket but two more free throws from Fisher and a trey from Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) got the Roos within five. The Gators used a 7-1 run to open up an 11-point advantage at 76-65, extending its lead to 11 with 5:05 to play. SUNY Canton would try and make a late rally but the hosts held on for the 89-79 win.

Fletcher and Tyler Ellison (New York, NY) had 16 points apiece for the Roos, with Ellison scoring 11 after halftime. Fletcher added 10 rebounds good for his first double-double in a SUNY Canton uniform. Annorh posted 13 points and five assists, while Bartenstein tallied nine points and five boards. Richardson recorded six points and six rebounds.

Sage placed four players in double figures led by a double-double from Mason Horne who had 15 points and 13 rebounds. Ryan LaBelle posted a game-high 18 points and Kai Deans and Matt LaClair registered 15 and 14 points, respectively. Both teams shot 42 percent from the field but the Roos (19) had seven more turnovers than Sage (12), which proved critical leading to a 33-14 points off turnovers edge for the hosts.
