Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team split two matches on the first day of the Victory Promotions Invitational. The Roos (4-1) fell 3-0 (23-25, 21-25, 24-26) to host St. Lawrence University before defeating St. Michael's College 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 22-25, 25-22) Friday evening on the campus of St. Lawrence.
Action was tight throughout the opening match against host St. Lawrence. The Roos were in the set throughout in the opening frame but the Saints were able to pull it out late, 25-23. The second set was much of the same but St. Lawrence used a run to open a small margin for the 25-21 victory. The final frame was back-and-forth but the Saints were able to use their crowd to hang on for the straight set win, 26-24.
Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) led all players in the match with 11 kills as she hit .321 and added seven digs. Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, Ontario) had a break-out match contributing eight kills and six digs. Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, Ontario) was a force defensively tallying 16 digs, while Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, NY) assisted a match-high 25 kills.
In its second match of the night SUNY Canton would match up with St. Michael's College, a Division II institution who defeated St. Lawrence University in five sets earlier in the night. The Roos were on fire in the opening set getting good quick movement around the court along with a strong presence at net making it tough for the Purple Knight attackers to get anything going. After opening up an 18-12 lead, SUNY Canton cruised to the opening set victory.
The Roos continued to carry momentum off their first set win getting off to a 10-6 start in the second and blowing open a 21-14 advantage. SUNY Canton fell behind 15-8 in the third stanza. St. Michael's picked up its play and closed out a tight frame, 25-22. SUNY Canton got out to a 12-8 start in the fourth but the Purple Knights trimmed the deficit to just one at 20-19. The Roos rattled off four of the next five points to reach game point at 24-20. St. Michael's proved tough tallying consecutive points, but SUNY Canton recorded the next point to close out the match, 25-22.
For her impressive play in four matches this weekend Bills was named to the All-Tournament team.
The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team returns to action tomorrow at the Victory Promotions Invitational at SUNY Potsdam. They will take on the hosts at 11:00 a.m. before squaring off with Norwich University at 1:00 p.m.
