Dominique & Cree Dominate as Women’s Hockey Shuts out Cortland 3-0

Canton, NY – Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, QUE) stopped all 37 shots she faced in her first career shutout and Karley Cree (Hogansburg, NY) tallied two goals and an assist to lead the women's hockey team past visiting SUNY Cortland, 3-0, Saturday afternoon.

The win gives the Roos their first win against an NCAA Division III varsity institution in school history and improves them to 1-2-1 on the season. The Red Dragons fall to 1-2-1.

Rhea Coad (Wheatfield, NY) got the scoring started just 2:11 into the opening period when Cree took the puck down the right side and dropped a pass to Coad who beat Cortland net minder Deanna Meunier glove side for the 1-0 lead. The goal was the first of Coad's young career.

The Roos tacked on a second score at the 17:37 mark when Jessica Kistabish (Pikogan, QUE) fired an initial shot on goal that was saved but the rebound ricocheted directly to Cree in front of net who beat Meunier stick side to make it 2-0 SUNY Canton.

Despite the visitors holding a 13-7 shots on goal edge in the opening 20 minutes it was the hosts who took a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard into the first intermission.

After a back-and-forth second period SUNY Canton added an insurance marker with just less than two minutes left in the second as Cree collected a loose puck in front of goal and beat the Red Dragon net minder low stick side to make it 3-0 Roos. Dominique was phenomenal between the pipes for the Roos stopping 13 shots in both the first and second periods to solidify a three-goal lead after 40 minutes.

The shots evened out a bit more in the final frame as the Red Dragons held a slim 11-9 shots on goal advantage, but Dominique continued to flash a quick glove and strong blocker as she turned aside 11 more Cortland shot attempts to secure her first collegiate shutout.

Dominique finished with 37 saves, while Meunier stopped 18 shots for SUNY Cortland. The Red Dragons went 0-for-4 on the power play, while SUNY Canton was 0-for-2 with the skater advantage. Cortland held a slight edge in faceoffs, 29-24.

The women's hockey team returns to the ice next Friday and Saturday when it travels to Pittsburgh, PA for a weekend match-up against Chatham University. The puck drops at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
