Strong Second Period Leads Nichols Past Men’s Hockey

Box Score

Canton, NY – The visiting Nichols College men's hockey team used a four-goal second period to defeat host SUNY Canton, 5-1, Sunday afternoon at the Roos House. The win improves the Bison to 1-0-0, while the loss drops the Kangaroos to 0-2-1.

After both teams went scoreless nearly the entire first period it was the visitors who netted the first goal of the game with just 15 seconds remaining in the opening period. Josh DeLoach fed Tyler Beasley who gave the Bison a 1-0 lead after one.

DeLoach and Beasley hooked up for another score 3:20 into the second period that sparked a run of three Nichols scores in a 71 second span. Joe Sposit assisted a Greg Strootman marker and then Frank Butler beat Roo netminder Louie Puig on the power play to make it 4-1 in favor of the Bison.

Butler added his second goal of the game off a pass from Beasley, who tallied three points in the contest. SUNY Canton got on the board with just nine seconds remaining in the second stanza when Dave Ferris assisted Saylor Preston who recorded his first tally of the season after beating Bison goaltender Alex Larson.

SUNY Canton struggled in the faceoff circle going just 25-for-70 in the contest. Despite being outscored 4-1 in the pivotal second period the Roos (12) had just one less shot on goal than the Bison (13) in that period.

Puig started between the pipes for SUNY Canton making 14 saves while surrendering four goals. Christopher Marsillo came on in relief turning aside 15 shots and allowing one goal in 35 plus minutes of action. Larson played the full 60 minutes for Nichols stopping 25 shots.

The men's hockey team opened the season with three straight contests in three nights. The team will be back in action Friday when it travels to take on Fredonia State beginning at 7:00 p.m. Stay up to date with the latest news directly from the SUNY Canton Athletics department by "liking" us on Facebook and "following" our Twitter account.
