Women’s Hockey Scores Four Unanswered in 4-2 Win Against Bengals

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's hockey team scored four unanswered goals to extend their unbeaten streak to six games as they defeated visiting Buffalo State, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in the Roos House. The win improves the Roos to 4-2-2, while the loss drops the Bengals to 0-7-0.

The visitors wasted no time getting on the board just 45 seconds in when Nikki Kirchberger netted her team-best fourth goal of the season. At the 14:01 mark the sophomore tallied her second goal of the game off a pass from Jackie Madison. The Bengals held a 9-3 shots on goal mark and took a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard at the first intermission.

The Roos once again made some great adjustments in the locker room seizing the momentum just over one minute into the second period when Karley Cree (Hogansburg, NY) flung a shot on net that slid between the five-hole of Bengal net minder Jordan Lee. SUNY Canton outshot Buffalo State 12-6 in the second period trailing by just one after two.

The hosts found the equalizer 10:07 into the third when Caroline Mundy (Kittanning, PA) fed the puck to Olga Russell (Rome, NY) who lit the lamp for her first career goal as a Roo. Two minutes later with the Roos on the penalty kill Dana Morrison (Wemindji, QUE) took the puck into the offensive zone and lifted the puck top shelf beating Lee to knot the game to give SUNY Canton its first lead of the contest.

With the Roos up one Buffalo State pulled the goaltender for the extra skater and Tia Mitchell (Akwesasne, NY) made them pay as she netted her first career goal off a pass from Jessica Kistabish (Pikogan, QUE) for the 4-2 final. SUNY Canton outshot the visitors 24-9 over the final two periods.

Shayna Dominique (Mistissini, QUE) turned aside 16 shots for her third straight win, while Lee made 23 saves in the loss for the Bengals. The women's hockey team is back in action Tuesday when it hosts Utica College at 7:00 p.m.
