Men’s Basketball Unable to Overcome Early Deficit Against Clarkson

Potsdam, NY – The SUNY Canton men's basketball team trailed by 17 points early in the contest and was unable to overcome the large deficit falling, 85-67, Saturday afternoon in the North Country Invitational. With the win the Golden Knights improve to 1-1, while the loss drops the Kangaroos to 0-2.
 
Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) paced three Roos in double figures as he finished with 14 points and three steals on 6-for-12 shooting. Rashad Richardson (Rochester, NY) and Romario Fletcher (Queens, NY) each chipped in 10 points, while Khalid Vaughn (New York, NY) and Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) tallied seven points apiece.
 
John Coleman led all scores for Clarkson finishing with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Felix Abongo also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards. Marques Charlton (15) and Dylan Hodownes (12) also registered in double figure points for the Knights.
 
Clarkson opened the contest scoring the games first 10 points before Bratton hit a jumper to get the Roos on the board 3:44 into the game. The Knights opened up a 17 point lead at 19-2 three minutes later. The Clarkson lead would balloon to as many as 22 midway through the half after a pair of Coleman free throws.
 
The Roos continued to hang tough responding with a 9-0 run to get within 33-20 after a dunk from Fletcher. Clarkson took a 13-point lead at 46-33 into halftime. Coleman and Charlton were impressive in the opening 20 minutes combining for 25 points. SUNY Canton shot a very respectable 45 percent but the Knights were on fire hitting on 65 percent of their field goal attempts.
 
Clarkson opened the lead to as many as 23 in the second half but a pesky Roo squad continued to battle using a 19-7 run over a seven minute span to get within 11 at 67-56. That was as close as SUNY Canton would get as the Knights held on for the 85-67 victory.
 
Clarkson dominated the battle on the boards 43-24 but the Roos won the turnovers battle forcing Clarkson to turn the ball over 19 times. The Knights finished cone contest shooting 53 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range. The Roos shot 49 percent and 30 percent, respectively. SUNY Canton continued to show its deep bench outscoring the Knight reserves 42-16.
