Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the 2013 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championships. The Roos (28-6) fell to a pesky Lindenwood University-Belleville squad, 2-1 (25-15, 20-25, 12-15), before defeating Johnson and Wales University (NC), 2-0 (25-16, 25-22).
Day one of the tournament consisted of best of three pool play matches as the 10 teams were split into two different five-team brackets. Pool play will resume Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. as eight more matches are scheduled for tomorrow. After pool play concludes the top four teams in each pool will be reseeded based on record and a eight team single elimination tournament will begin at approximately 4:00 p.m. The quarterfinal round will take place at 4:00 and 5:30 p.m. with the winners advancing to the semifinal round on Saturday.
In its opening match of the day the Roos got out to a quick start dominating a 25-15 first set against the Lynx. SUNY Canton opened the second set with a 5-0 lead behind the service game of
Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY), however, Lindenwood-Belleville would respond with a 13-8 run to tie it at 13 all. Down the stretch the Lynx proved strong as they prevailed 25-20. The third set was back-and-forth early as Lindenwood-Belleville took a slim 8-7 lead at the changeover. Once again the Lynx were able to separate down the stretch for the 15-12 victory.
Lindsay Bryer (Wilson, NY) and
Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) paced the Roos with eight kills apiece, while Cornish added seven kills and eight digs.
Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) dug up nine balls while
Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, NY) assisted a match-best 21 kills. SUNY Canton hit .254 as a team in the match.
In its second tilt of the day the Roos came out sharper and used a stronger service game to get by Johnson and Wales in two sets.
Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, ON) finished with a match-best eight kills, while Mynter tallied a match-high 23 assists to go with her team-best six digs. Cornish put down six kills and Bills and Bryer each recorded four kills apiece.
The women's volleyball team is back in action Friday when it plays its final two pool play matches. The fourth seeded Roos square off with sixth seeded Rochester College at 10:00 a.m. before a 2:30 p.m. battle with second seeded Florida College. Both matches will be back in the friendly confines of the Roos House where SUNY Canton is a perfect 9-0 this season.
