Roos Tame Bears in Five Set Thriller



Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team used a strong team effort to down visiting SUNY Potsdam in a thrilling five set match Tuesday evening at the Roos House. The Roos (15-2) came from one set down to defeat the Bears (9-10) 3-2 (16-25, 25-18, 25-18, 18-25, 15-13).

SUNY Canton fell behind early in the opening set, as the visitors were able to close out the first frame in convincing fashion. SUNY Canton struggled offensively tallying just eight kills compared to five errors. The hosts were able to bounce back taking the second and third frames by identical scores of 25-18 as they combined for 19 kills. The Bears proved tough, as they were able to earn a fourth set win to knot the match at two sets apiece.

The Roos got out to a 6-3 start in the all-important fifth set. Potsdam answered back with four consecutive points to take a 7-6 lead, prompting a time out from Head Coach Carol LaMarche.  SUNY Canton scored two of the next three points and were all tied up after a Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) kill. The Roos scored three consecutive points behind the service game of Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY), tip kill of Cornish, and block at net by Caitlin Grimshaw (Adams, NY) to open up an 11-8 advantage.

The teams exchanged points to get to 12-9. Leading 13-9 out of a Potsdam timeout the Bears responded with two points to get within 13-11. After the Roos made it 14-11 SUNY Potsdam got within 14-13, but the hosts closed out the match 15-13 in front of a raucous crowd at the Roos House.
 
Cornish spearheaded the attack with team-highs of 13 kills, 11 digs and four service aces. Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, Ontario) added eight kills and six digs, while Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, Ontario)added nine digs. Bills floored five kills along with a team-high five blocks and Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, NY) dished out 29 assists to go with her seven digs, four kills and two blocks.

 
The women's volleyball team returns to action this weekend in Union, NJ when it takes part in the Kean University Invitational. The Roos square off with the City College of New York and host Kean University Friday at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. before taking on Centenary College and Brooklyn College Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
