Box Score (Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team played the first semifinal match on Sunday in the 2012 USCAA national championship and dropped a 3-0 decision to defending champions Florida College at Roos House.
The Roos move to 25-3 overall and they have one more match in the tournament when they play in the third-place game at 2 p.m. against the losing team of the second semifinal between Daemen College and Rochester College.
The Falcons jumped out on the Roos for an early 6-2 lead in the opening set and went on to win 25-12. In the second set, SUNY Canton rallied to surge ahead 7-5 before Florida scored four straight points to go ahead 9-7. Sophomore
Caitlin Grimshaw (Adams, N.Y.) pounded down a kill in the middle to make the score 9-8 and then Florida regained a 14-9 advantage before the Roos scored two straight to pull within three points. SUNY Canton scored two in a row later in the set off a kill by senior
Danielle Swanston (Burke, N.Y.) and a solid block from sophomore
Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, N.Y.) making the score 20-15. The Roos pulled within four, 23-19 a short time later on a hitting error by the Falcons, who then closed the set for a 25-19 win and a 2-0 lead. Florida then won the match and moved on to the championship game with a 25-16 win in the third set.
Freshman
Morgan Bills (Walworth, N.Y.) paced the Roos with seven kills. Swanston finished with five kills and three digs. Mynter had 16 assists and three digs. Grimshaw added four digs. Freshman
Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, Ontario) collected 16 digs and senior
Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) added two kills.
Keri Taylor nailed 18 kills to lead Florida and Jenny Moorer had 35 assists.
