(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team defeated Carlow University 2-1 in their second game of pool play during the first day of the 2012 USCAA national championship held at SUNY Canton on Friday.
The third-seeded Roos opened the day with a 2-0 loss to top seed Daemen College as the Wildcats won 25-20 and 25-18. SUNY Canton rebounded in the afternoon rallying to beat the Celtics 23-25, 25-20 and 15-9 to end the day 1-1.
In the third and final set against Carlow, the Roos fell behind 2-0 but then reeled off six straight points to surge ahead 6-2. Carlow responded with two straight points to pull within two at 6-4, but again the Roos had an answer as they scored three straight, including two kills from freshman
Morgan Bills (Walworth, N.Y.) to make the score 9-4. SUNY Canton then pulled ahead 11-5 before the Celtics trimmed the lead to 11-8. A kill from senior
Danielle Swanston (Burke, N.Y.) and a block by the Roos made it 13-9 and then 14-9 after a Carlow hitting error at the net. Sophomore
Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, Ontario) then nailed a kill off a Carlow player to give the Roos a 15-9 win.
Bills finished with 11 kills and Reynolds had nine kills and seven digs. Sophomore
Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, N.Y.) added 25 assists, five digs and two kills and Swanston nailed seven kills and made eight digs.
Mynter had 19 assists and seven digs to lead the Roos against Daemen. Reynolds had nine kills and three digs. Bills added four kills, Swanston had five kills and freshman
Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, Onatrio) made 14 digs.
SUNY Canton switches venues to Dana Hall on Saturday for the second day of pool play starting at 10 a.m. against the University of Cincinnati-Clermont and then again against Penn College at 2:30 p.m.
