(Alfred, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team had two valiant comebacks against Alfred University on Friday but eventually fell to Saxons 3-2 in Alfred.
The Roos, ranked ninth in the USCAA Coaches Poll, dropped the first set 19-25 and then fell behind in the second set before rallying for a 26-24 win. Alfred captured the third set with a narrow 25-21 victory and the Roos clawed their way back from another deficit in the fourth set to post a 25-21 win and force a decisive fifth set. After a tough battle the Saxons came out on top 15-11.
"Each game we learn something, and today we learned that we can come from behind and win a set," said first-year head coach Carol LaMarche. "Both sets that we won we fought from behind and I am proud of the girls for the effort and fight they put forth tonight. Next time we will get that fifth set."
Freshman setter Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, N.Y.) and freshman outside and middle hitter Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, Ontario) each produced career games on Friday. Mynter distributed a career-high 44 assists while Reynolds pounded down a career-high 16 kills.
Abbey Shoen (Waddington, N.Y.) collected 11 kills. Caitlin Grimshaw (Adams, N.Y.) and Amanda Brown (Massena, N.Y.) had eight kills apiece, and Cassandra Gray (Watertown, N.Y.) added three serving aces.
