(Canton, N.Y.)- Garrett Rosenbaum (Charleston, S.C.) netted a hat trick and SUNY Canton used a strong second period to beat Cornell University 8-2 in a non-conference men's ice hockey game Saturday night at the Canton Pavilion.
The game was tied 0-0 after the first period and then the Roos (10-8) popped in four goals, three coming in a seven-minute span, on 16 shots in the second to take command of the game. The Roos outshot the Big Red 36-18 for the game.
Rosenbaum opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 3:19 into the second period ripping a shot from the high slot.
Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.) made it 2-0 a minute later when he tipped in a rebound past Cornell goalie Chris Hogan for a power play goal. The onslaught continued at the 7:44 mark when Adam Fedor (Orleans, Ontario) scored on the power play after Liggio was driven hard into the boards. Eric Cook (Cary, N.C.) settled the puck on the lower right corner and slid a nice pass across the crease to Fedor who one-timed it past Hogan.
Andrew Royce (Somers, Conn.) scored the final goal of the second period and the Roos led 4-0 heading into the final period.
Rosenbaum scored twice more in the third to complete the hat trick, one on a high wrist shot and another on a hard slap shot, both from almost the same spot inside the top of the left faceoff circle. Chris Ciczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and Adam Levy (Penfield, N.Y.) also scored for SUNY Canton in the final period.
Liggio and Royce also had two assists apiece and Jimmy Merrow (Plainsboro, N.J.) had 16 saves in goal.
Ethan Prather and Edward Wedel scored for Cornell and Chris Hogan had 28 saves.
