Mark Bickelhaupt was named the SUNY Canton head men's and women's golf coach in February 2020 and enters his fifth full year coaching the programs during the 2024-25 academic year.
During the 2023-24 academic year the men's golf team won three tournaments, took second place twice and finished third in four others. Adam Szlamczynski was named the SUNY Men's Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year (2023 & 2024). The women were led by Gwendolyn Glennon who earned medalist honors at one event in the spring and earned the Elite Academic Award at the Northeast Women's Golf Championship for the second consecutive year.
SUNY Canton hosted the 2023 North Atlantic Conference Championship at Partridge Run Golf & Country Club on October 7th and 8th, 2023. Szlamczynski earned Second Team All-Conference honors and was named the NAC Senior Scholar Athlete. He also shot a round of 3-under par, 69, at the Clarkson Invitational (9/5/23) shooting the lowest round in relation to par in school history.
Following the fall 2022 season Anthony Marion was named NAC Rookie of the Year, shooting the lowest two-day score of any first year player at the conference championship. Bickelhaupt was named the NAC Coach of the Year after helping guide the Roos to a program best second place finish out of 11 teams at the NAC Championship. Marion's first round of 69 (-1) was the third lowest in relation to par in program history at the time. Both Marion and Szlamczynski earned First Team All-Conference honors.
Bickelhaupt spent time coaching the SUNY Canton golf team during its junior college years from 2001 to 2003. The golf programs later reformed during the NCAA Division III era with men’s golf during the 2011-12 academic year and women’s golf beginning on a club level during the 2015-16 season and as a varsity sport in 2016-17.
In addition to his previous coaching experience with golf, Bickelhaupt has been on the St. Lawrence University men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant to Head Coach Chris Downs since 1998.
Bickelhaupt took over for Kevin Maginn who spent the last nine seasons coaching the SUNY Canton men and coached the women since the program’s inception.
“Mark’s previous experience coaching our golf program will serve him well as he takes over our men’s and women’s golf programs,” Sieminski said at the time of his appointment. “His more than 20 years working with the Saints men’s basketball program and helping to develop numerous student-athletes has prepared him well for this position.
Over the past 20 years Bickelhaupt has worked primarily with the post players for the Saints and has been instrumental in the mentoring of several All-Liberty League selections and All-Americans. Bickelhaupt has also served the Saints staff as a player development coach.
"I am eager for the opportunity to lead the men's and women's golf programs forward at SUNY Canton," Bickelhaupt said at the time of his hiring. "I look forward to getting to know our current student-athletes and helping them develop their skills as we continue to grow both programs."
