SUNY Canton Head Men’s Soccer Coach Tim Penrod has announced the addition of Paul Nana Afful to the coaching staff for the 2018 season.
“Paul is a fantastic young man with a great deal of energy and passion for the game,” Penrod said. “He has played at an incredibly high level and has tremendous leadership qualities that will have a massive impact on the young men in our program.”
Afful began college at the University of Education in Winneba, Ghana, before completing his Bachelor’s degree in Sports Studies at St. Bonaventure University.
As a student-athlete and two-year member of the Bonnies men’s soccer team, Afful was named to the Atlantic-10 All-Rookie Team in 2016 and team captain for the 2017 season. As a senior he tallied three goals and three assists including netting the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win in overtime v. Bucknell. Afful played in the competitive Professional Development League (PDL), winning a championship in 2017 with the Charlotte Eagles.
“I am very excited to be joining such a competitive program,” Afful said. “As a student-athlete, I always felt I was at my best in the most competitive environments. I hope that my experience as a student-athlete at St. Bonaventure will be helpful to the players in this program, and I look forward to all the coming season has to offer.”
Along with playing at St. Bonaventure, Coach Afful was active in the Olean community, serving as a volunteer at the local YMCA and campus community outreach programs. His final semester also saw him intern with the men’s soccer team’s staff. His responsibilities included day-to-day operations management and leadership development of student-athletes.
