Mahfuz Yakubu was named an assistant coach with the men’s soccer staff for the 2024 season.
“Mahfuz is a passionate, driven, and gracious young man that we are incredibly excited to have joining us,” Penrod said at the time of his hiring. “He had a fantastic collegiate career at the NCAA Division III level, and I believe he has the capability to help us significantly as we move into the SUNYAC this fall.”
A native of Kumasi, Ghana, Yakubu was a four-year member of the men’s soccer team at Muskingum University in New Concord, OH. Over his four seasons, he appeared in 59 matches, scoring 15 goals and registering three assists, earning Third-Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors in his senior campaign. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Sports Administration, with minors in Coaching and Business Administration. While at Muskingum, Yakubu played under Hall of Fame Coach John Bluem, who previously led Ohio State men’s soccer for over 25 seasons.
“I’m thrilled to join the SUNY Canton men’s soccer program and be a part of this incredible family. This opportunity means the world to me, and I’m fully committed to contributing everything I can to help our student-athletes grow both on and off the field,” Yakubu said. “I’m excited to work alongside Coach Penrod and the rest of the staff to build something special this season as we enter the SUNYAC. Together, I believe we can achieve great things!”
“Through the interview process, it was clear that Mahfuz has a passion for coaching,” Penrod added. “He clearly demonstrated a strong tactical knowledge of the game, while maintaining a mindset of people first through his proposed interactions with student-athletes. I am absolutely confident he will grow quickly into his new role with us and have a very positive impact with our guys right from the start!”
Yakubu’s primary responsibilities will include video analysis, recruiting travel, and practice planning.
