Hediberto "Eddie" Vargas enters his fourth season as an assistant with the Roos baseball program during the 2020-21 academic year.

Vargas was an outfielder, catcher and first baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates after signing with them in 1977. From 1980-1984 he remained their top prospect. He played professionally for several years in the Pirates and Reds organizations and then went on to play in the Winter Leagues in Puerto Rico until 1992. Vargas earned the nickname "The Monster" from the fans due to his monstrous home runs. In Spring 2016 when SUNY Canton played in Puerto Rico, the entire team loved spending time with Vargas and hearing of his passion for the game of baseball. Players and coaches listened to his life experiences, which included stories of playing with Hall of Famer Willie Stargell and baseball greats Bill Madlock, Willie Horton, and Dave Parker.
