Diaz’s Four Hit Day Leads Roos to Season-Ending Win over Plattsburgh

Canton, NY – Sal Diaz has been a force to be reckoned with at the plate all season and showed that in his final collegiate appearance with a four-hit game, a triple shy of the cycle, five runs batted in and four runs scored to lift the SUNY Canton baseball team to a 10-8 victory over the Plattsburgh Cardinals in their season finale Monday.

THE BASICS
  • Results: SUNY Canton 10, Plattsburgh 8
  • Location: Plattsburgh High School – Plattsburgh, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (11-22, 3-15 SUNYAC) | Plattsburgh (15-16, 5-13 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SUNY Canton got going with two outs in the first inning after Diaz doubled and then Jared Paone singled. Diaz was initially going to halt at third, but the ball was kicked in left field which allowed the senior to score the game's first run.
  • In the second inning, AJ Campi laced an RBI single as the inning's first run, then with two on, Diaz launched a ball out and over the left field wall with the three-run bomb giving the Roos a 5-0 lead.
  • Plattsburgh answered in the bottom of the second with a run, but the Roos bats had some more fun in the third. Chris McLean scored on a wild pitch, Korbin Lovejoy drove one in off an RBI single, and then Paone scored on an error as SUNY Canton was now ahead 8-1.
  • The Cardinals turned in a big inning after that with two leadoff walks and then two doubles and a single leading to three runs with the Roos only up 8-4 now.
  • Plattsburgh helped the Roos score more runs in the fourth with two hit-by-pitches to start the SUNY Canton baserunners. The Roos scored twice more in the frame, one off a wild pitch, and another on a catcher's interference.
  • Plattsburgh got a little bit closer in the next couple of innings, scoring one more in the bottom of the fourth and then getting another run across in the fifth as the contest was 10-6 with four innings left to play.
  • Ahead into the seventh, a hit-by-pitch and a walk put two on for the Cardinals, then the hosts got both to score on an RBI double later with the Cardinals only down by two runs.
  • The Roos did not get much offense in the late stages of the game, but they did not need to. Maxwell Rose took the hill part-way through the seventh inning and slammed the door with a 2.2 shutout innings as the Roos took the season finale by a score of 10-8.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
