Roos See Success in Series Opener against Fredonia with 4-3 Comeback Victory

Canton, NY – Jared Paone delivered two hits, including a double, and an RBI, Korbin Lovejoy had a game-tying single, and Mark Maybee Jr. had the game-winning RBI single in the 8th as the SUNY Canton baseball team used a three-run eighth inning to comeback and stun the Fredonia Blue Devils 4-3 Friday.

THE BASICS
  • Results: SUNY Canton 4, Fredonia 3
  • Location: SUNY Canton Baseball Field – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (9-21, 1-14 SUNYAC) | Fredonia (6-23, 5-10 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Fredonia drew first blood in the opening inning, scoring a run off an RBI double, then getting another on a successful safety squeeze.
  • A leadoff hit-by-pitch in the top of the second came across to score and the Blue Devils were ahead 3-0.
  • The Roos had plenty of baserunners in the first three innings, including hits by Lovejoy and Chris McLean, but several men were left stranded.
  • Heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Blue Devils got two outs but then AJ Campi ripped a double which was followed by McLean dropping a single in left-center gap to score Campi as the Roos got on the board.
  • Starting pitcher Johnathan Guerrero just got better and better as the game went along. The California native pitched around a jam in the fourth and did not allow a hit in the final four innings of his outing as the Roos kept it close.
  • Still losing 3-1 late, the Roos still needed runs and got what they wanted in the bottom of the eighth. Diaz singled and then Paone ripped a nice double out towards the wall in right-center, plenty deep enough to send Diaz around to score.
  • Lovejoy later singled and Paone scored the game-tying run as it was now 3-3. Later with two outs and a runner on third, Mark Maybee Jr. hit a soft ground ball just to the right of the pitcher's mound and then barely beat out the throw to first to get the crowd roaring with the third run of the inning which gave the Roos the lead at 4-3.
  • Zander Johnson came into the game in the ninth looking for the save, but the ninth inning began with a leadoff walk which Fredonia promptly moved over with a sacrifice bunt. However, Johnson recovered with a strikeout and a weak ground ball back to himself as the Roos earned their first SUNYAC win of the season at 4-3.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Three different players had two hits in the contest, including Paone who was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Lovejoy who had the game-tying base hit, and McLean with an RBI single in the fifth. Maybee Jr. had the eventually game-winning single.
  • Guerrero's start was another strong one with three earned runs in seven innings with three strikeouts. Maxwell Rose earned his first win of the season with a shutout eighth inning, and Johnson slammed the door in the ninth for his second save of the year.
  • Fredonia had only five hits on the night, two by designated hitter Tucker Schwab. Bryce Firkins and Andrew Tucker each had one run driven in. Morgan Zientara, the ace for Fredonia, had an impressive start seven innings in length, allowing just one earned run with five hits, no walks, and six strikeouts.
  • The Roos held the Blue Devils to just five hits – three of those coming in the first inning. SUNY Canton had 10 hits comprised from seven different players and pitching did their job with runners on base, leaving 13 Blue Devils stranded in the contest.
