Vázquez Has Big Performance at the Dish to Lead Roos in Series Finale Against New Paltz

Lowville, NY – Eliezer Vázquez had three hits and three runs driven in, Jared Paone and Jayden Cunningham each had three hits as well, but the Roos could not take the series finale, falling 10-5 on Sunday at Lowville High School.

THE BASICS
  • Results: New Paltz 10, SUNY Canton 5
  • Location: Lowville High School – Lowville, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (8-18, 0-11 SUNYAC) | New Paltz (18-12, 8-6 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The New Paltz bats were on fire early in the contest, and after three singles, a double, and a triple in the first inning, the Hawks were already ahead 4-0.
  • The visitors looked like they were running away with it early after another run scored in the top of the second, and then the Hawks scraped across three more in the top of the third to put themselves up 8-0.
  • The Roos had three hits across the first three innings but were left off the scoreboard.
  • In the fourth, SUNY Canton got the offense brewing again with an AJ Campi single and then Korbin Lovejoy walked which was followed by a hit-by-pitch drawn by Lance Phillips Jr. to pack the bags. However, a strikeout ended the threat as the Roos left three runners on base.
  • In the fifth inning, hits really began to pile on for SUNY Canton. Paone walked, Cunningham had a base hit, and Chris McLean singled to put three on. Campi was responsible for the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Later in the frame, Vázquez drove in two with a single, and Lovejoy singled to drive home the fourth run of the inning as the Roos cut the lead in half.
  • In the sixth, the Hawks got one back, but SUNY Canton matched that in the bottom of the frame with three straight hits off the bats of Cunningham, Sal Diaz, and Vázquez and the game was now 9-5 heading into the final three innings.
  • New Paltz jumped back out to a five-run lead in the seventh thanks to a walk and a run-scoring triple.
  • The Roos had chances to add more runs in the final few innings, with three baserunners in the seventh and eighth, but the Hawks pitching got outs went they needed to.
  • Paone had his third hit on the afternoon in the ninth, a two-out single, but the Hawks got the sweep after a fielder's choice groundout ended game three of the series 10-5.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Paone, Vázquez, Cunningham all had three hits as part of a 15-hit afternoon for the SUNY Canton offense. Campi had two hits, a sacrifice fly, and a stolen base.
  • Karter Kenniston had a very nice relief appearance with 3.1 innings, allowing zero earned runs, with two strikeouts. Adam Cook pitched for the second straight day and ended his two appearances with two scoreless innings.
  • For New Paltz, Garrett Grathwohl and Joe Scarabino each had 3-for-6 afternoons both driving home two in the win. Connor Catania pitched three scoreless innings in the seventh inning onwards to earn himself a save.
  • The Roos out-hit the Hawks 15-13 in the contest, although all 15 hits were singles and New Paltz had five hits for extra bags. Errors also hurt the Roos with four committed leading to five unearned runs.
