Paone, Phillips Jr. Anchor Roos Offense in Game One vs. Oneonta; Game Two Postponed

Canton, NY – Jared Paone and Lance Phillips Jr. had two hits each, but the Roos dropped a 9-3 contest in their second game of the season series to the Oneonta Red Dragons Sunday afternoon.

Initially scheduled for a doubleheader, both coaches mutually agreed to call off the second game due to impending rain affecting the North County late into Sunday.

THE BASICS
  • Results: Oneonta 9, SUNY Canton 3
  • Location: SUNY Canton Baseball Field – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (8-15, 0-8 SUNYAC) | Oneonta (15-13, 5-5 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos got out in front first in this game, dealing some two-out damage in their first chances with the bats. After two quick outs, Sal Diaz walked, Eliezer Vázquez singled, then Paone drove in the game's first run with a single into right field as the Roos were ahead 1-0 after the first inning.
  • Following this though, the Red Dragons responded in the top of the second with a leadoff double, a wild pitch, then a sacrifice fly to tie it up.
  • Into the top of the third, Oneonta had a triple, a single, and a two-run home run to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Two more hits in the inning following the home run gave the Red Dragons an insurance run as they went ahead of SUNY Canton 5-1.
  • SUNY Canton got one run back in the fourth. Paone was plunked, then Phillips Jr. laced a base hit opposite field. Mark Maybee Jr. moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt, and then Zack Baiani had an RBI groundout as the game was now 5-2.
  • Johnathan Guerrero began to settle in after the third inning, pitching a scoreless fourth, fifth, and sixth, only allowing a couple of hits over those three innings.
  • The Roos nibbled at the lead again in the sixth, with a Paone double, a Phillips Jr. single, then a sacrifice fly by Maybee Jr. put the game at 5-3.
  • Unfortunately, though, the Red Dragons put up a crooked number in the seventh with their second four-run inning of the game. Six hits and a few stolen bases put Oneonta in the driver's seat with a six-run advantage heading into the final few chances for the Roos.
  • SUNY Canton went scoreless in the seventh and eighth. Chris McLean had a two-out base hit in the ninth, but a flyball concluded the game as the Red Dragons won 9-3 for the second straight game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Paone and Phillips Jr. had two hits each for the Roos. Phillips Jr. has been feasting on Oneonta pitching through two games so far as he is now 5-for-6 in the season series.
  • Guerrero threw 6.1 innings in his start, allowing five earned runs while striking out six. Maxwell Rose pitched the final 2.1 for the Roos, allowing no runs and just one hit while fanning five batters.
  • For Oneonta, Ryan Cronin and Nick Jacoby each had three hits. Cronin was the MVP with a double, a two-run home run, and three runs scored. Aiden Chartrand earned the win as the starting pitcher allowing three earned runs in six innings while Lukas Jachens was dominant in the final three innings, allowing just one hit and no earned runs getting himself his second save of the year.
  • The Red Dragons won the hit battle 15-7 and did their job defensively with zero errors. Paone's double in the sixth was the only extra base hit for SUNY Canton while Oneonta had six.
