Roos Record 18 Hits in SUNYAC Doubleheader vs. Hawks

New Paltz, NY – Junior Derek Maldonado crossed home plate twice as the Roos recorded 18 hits dropping a SUNYAC doubleheader at SUNY New Paltz on Saturday afternoon. The Roos were led by Eliezer Vazquez and Maldonado with three hits each while Chris McLean, Alphonse Fuca and Liam Hohertz added two hits apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos started out hot at the plate registering four hits in the top of the first inning
  • McLean, Bradley Mills, Vazquez and Lance Phillips Jr. all reached base on singles during the inning, but the Roos were unable to bring a run across as a pair of baserunners were thrown out at home plate during the inning.
  • The Hawks capitalized scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning with five hits in the frame.
  • Junior Derek Maldonado singled in the top of the second inning with two outs.
  • The Roos held the Hawks hitless in the bottom of the second and third innings in the contest showing some excellent defense.
  • Phillips Jr. led off the top of the fourth inning with a single, but the Roos were unable to capitalize as a fielder's choice and pair of ground outs ended the threat.
  • The Hawks scored one run in the fourth, five runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth leading to the run-rule win in seven innings.
  • Sophomore AJ Campi pitched for the Roos forcing eight flyouts in his five innings on the mound. He gave up seven earned runs with five strikeouts and three walks on 104 pitches.
  • Freshman Lucas Gravlin pitched one inning for the Roos and forced three groundouts on 14 pitches.
  • Michael Weed earned the shutout win for the Hawks tossing a complete game with seven strikeouts.
  • Seven Roos reached base with Phillips reaching twice during the first contest of the day.
  • Anthony Pericolosi and Tommy Kreider had three hits each for the Hawks.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos opened up the first inning by getting two runners on base as Campi walked and Mills was hit by a pitch, but a fly out and ground out ended the inning.
  • The Hawks jumped ahead early bringing two runs home in the bottom of the first inning.  
  • Fuca was also hit by a pitch to open the second inning but a strikeout and double play ball ended the scoring chance.
  • The Hawks plated two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth to open a 7-0 lead after four frames.
  • Maldonado and Hohertz both singled with one out in the fifth. Alfredo Pabon then reached first base on a fielder's choice as an error allowed Maldonado to score on the play.
  • The Roos ended the top of the fifth inning leaving three on base and left two on base during the top of the sixth.
  • The Hawks were held scoreless during the bottom of the fifth and then scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and one run in the seventh to make the score 10-1 in favor of the hosts.
  • The Roos scored again in the top of the ninth inning after four hits by Maldonado, Hohertz, Jake Detlefsen and McLean.
  • Maldonado added his second run of the day in the game after a pinch-hit RBI single from Detlefsen leading to the 10-2 final score.
  • Vazquez, Maldonado and Hohertz all had two hit outings in the nightcap for the Roos.
  • Tyler Lopez notched the win for the Hawks on the mound tossing the first two innings with a walk and strikeout. He was one of five pitchers used on the day in a predetermined pitching by committee to be eligible for the win.
  • Senior Kayden Guerin faced 27 batters tossing 78 pitches on the mound for the Roos forcing nine groundouts and three flyouts. He gave up seven earned runs with three strikeouts and two walks in 5.1 innings. Keegan Franklin and Maxwell Rose finished the final 2.2 innings in relief.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in action on Wednesday for a non-league doubleheader against Utica at Onondaga Community College at 1 p.m.
