Roos Break Assist Record, Push to 8-0 with Conference-Opening Romp of Morrisville

Morrisville, NY – The SUNY Canton women's basketball team gave a whole new meaning to the phrase "Sharing the Wealth" Friday night as they dished out a SUNY Canton D3-era record 32 assists in a 90-53 win at SUNY Morrisville. 

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Five minutes in and the Roos were up 9-7 with Kat McRobbie-Taru scoring four points early on.
  • Late in the quarter, back-to-back triples by Natalie Bush and Sierra Pabo fueled the Roos as SUNY Canton got out ahead 17-12. The Roos went on to hold a 17-13 lead after ten minutes.
  • The second quarter could not have been much better on the visiting side with Morrisville missing their first six shot attempts and the Roos cashing in 10 straight points with Kate Grainger dialed in with two three-pointers. SUNY Canton more than doubled the Mustangs in points with 27-13 with this run.
  • Morrisville got within eight, but Bush had five points in the final five minutes of the first half and the Roos lead was back up to 38-25 at the conclusion of the first half. Grainger led the way with eight points at the break while Pabo had seven points and five assists.
  • The Mustangs outscored the Roos 12-5 at the start of the third quarter which led to a two-possession game with the score at 43-37 with 6:34 remaining on the third quarter timer.
  • Grace Villnave and Grainger both had layups, then Pabo had herself a nice stretch with seven of the game's next nine points.
  • Chelsie Tyler and Emma Diehl teamed up for nine points in the final two minutes, and SUNY Canton finished the third quarter with an 11-2 run, ahead 63-44.
  • The fourth quarter was all Roos as SUNY Canton was making buckets, turning long rebounds into transition opportunities, and forcing turnovers on the other end. The Roos outscored the Mustangs 27-9 in the final 10 minutes with 10 different players scoring as SUNY Canton ran the Mustangs out of their gym with a 90-53 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grainger had her fourth double-double in her fifth game of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. She also was a contributor to the assist party with four helpers.
  • Sierra Pabo went for 14 points, eight boards, and a team-high eight assists. McRobbie-Taru posted 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting as well as four assists.
  • Anyssia Ingersoll had 18 points for the Mustangs while Celeste Baldwin had herself a night with a 10-14-7 stat line.
  • SUNY Canton shot 44% from the field (37-85) while Morrisville was only at 32% (22-69). The Roos dominated the glass 58-41, doubled the Mustangs in assists (32-16) and had a season high seven blocked shots with Pabo getting three of those.
  • Before tonight's game, the previous team-high in assists was 30, set against VTSU Johnson (2/10/24). In tonight's game, 10 players had at least one assist with four players having at least four. 86% (32-37) of field goals made by the Roos had an associated helper.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos will have by far their most difficult task ahead of them next, as they play on the road at the Cortland Red Dragons who are receiving votes in the top 25. The game against the defending SUNYAC champs will start at 2 p.m., tomorrow, December 6.
