Barone & Maldonado Homer as Baseball Closes out Season Series v. Tigers

Cobleskill, NY – Nick Barone and Derek Maldonado both hit home runs and combined to drive in eight runs on the day, but the SUNY Canton baseball team dropped both ends of a NAC doubleheader at SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos got on the board first in the opener when Maldonado doubled home Nick Shoemaker in the first after he drew a leadoff walk.
  • The Tigers took the lead for good when they plated four runs in the second. Cobleskill extended their lead to 7-1 with a three-run third.
  • Canton got within one scoring two runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Maldonado hit a two-run homer in the third and Barone hit a three-run blast in the fourth.
  • The fifth inning proved to be the difference as the Tigers put up six runs on seven hits and an error in the frame. Cobleskill tacked on two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
  • The Roos scored a pair in their final at-bats with Edilberto Rosado bringing home Mike Henry and Frank Nieto on a two RBI single.
  • Maldonado and Eliezer Vazquez had two hits each, while Maldonado and Barone drove in three runs each.
  • Stephen Tejada went 5-for-6 for the Tigers, while Logan Firment and Zach Ducorsky had three hits each.
  • Evan Balbera picked up his first win of the season allowing three earned runs with two walks and a strike out in four innings.
  • Hunter LaValley took the loss allowing seven runs with two walks in two innings.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Cobleskill's bats stayed hot from the get go in the nightcap as they plated five runs in the first and three in the second. The Tigers tacked on one in the third and four in the fifth.
  • The Roos two runs in Game 2 came on a Barone two RBI double to right field scoring Matthew Brandes and Nieto.
  • Barone, Rosado and Brandes had one hit each for Canton.
  • Sam Gutierrez went 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double and seven RBI for Cobleskill.
  • Tanner Wood earned the win tossing three innings in the abbreviated five inning game allowing two runs with two walks and two strike outs. The game was called after five innings due to poor field conditions with rain.
  • Daniel Aviles took the loss allowing five earned runs with three walks and a strike out.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos upcoming weekend schedule for their three-game series against SUNY Poly has been adjusted. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a single nine-inning game on Sunday at 2 p.m.
