Strong Special Teams Pushes Mustangs Over Roos in SUNYAC Play

Canton, NY – Senior Victoria McGarrity and freshman Chamonix Jackson each scored a goal for the SUNY Canton women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon, but strong special teams play, including four power-play goals, by SUNY Morrisville put the Mustangs on top by a final score of 6-2 in SUNYAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • McGarrity opened the scoring at 5:42 of the first, taking advantage of drop passes from Riley Andzel and Iida Laitinen before sweeping past a Mustang defender and beating goaltender Maggie Jones five hole.
  • Hailee Easson tied the game at one, scoring a power-play goal at 2:31 of the second period and was assisted by Kate Mabey and Emma Thompson.
  • The Roos regained the lead at 13:37 of the second when Jackson stole the puck at the Morrisville blue line and skated coast-to-coast before snapping a shot over Jones' glove, making the score 2-1.
  • Two additional Mustang power-play goals by Zoe Leas and Kennedy Kirkby as well as a Madison Tomkins goal put Morrisville up 4-2 at the second intermission.
  • Alana McDonald scored a power-play goal at 10:32 of the third and Easson potted an empty-netter to make the final score 6-2 in favor of the Mustangs.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Roos were 0/4 on the power play and 2-6 on the penalty kill.
  • Canton held an advantage in shots on goal, 35-29.  Morrisville had the edge in faceoffs 34-31.
  • Sophomore Anna Moulson made 25 saves in the loss while Jones made 33 saves for the Mustangs.

The Roos host #3 Plattsburgh State in a pair of SUNYAC games on Friday February 2nd and Saturday February 3rd at 7:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively.
