THE BASICS
- Result: SUNY Canton 2, Russell Sage 1
- Location: SUNY Canton Turf – Canton, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (1-2-0) | Russell Sage (2-1-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Russell Sage controlled the scoring chances early with Owen Kwong making four saves over the first 24 minutes, but it was the Roos who struck first.
- Torales took the corner in the 28th minute from the far left corner. His service found Michael Gavette in the box who headed the ball toward the far post as Ferris struck a one-time volley into the left corner of goal. Ferris scored his first career goal just five minutes after being subbed on.
- Canton nearly doubled its lead six minutes later when Chris Escobar fired a rocket from well beyond the box as Gator keeper Jordan Prouty made a great save that then deflected off the crossbar and out.
- RSC held a 4-2 shots on goal advantage in the opening half, while the Roos controlled corner kicks 4-2 and took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
- The Gators knotted things at one apiece in the 66th minute when Mason Kievit scored off a corner kick from the near corner. He bent the ball high in the air just over the outstretched arms of Kwong and under the cross bar.
- With 9:04 remaining in the contest the Gators were whistled for a red card on a takedown of Gavette just outside the penalty box. Torales and Escobar both stood over the ball for the free kick. With Escobar on the left he circled around, and Torales placed a left-footed shot into the lower left corner for the ultimate game-winner as his team celebrated in front of a strong Roos crowd.
- Brennan Harmer made a nice defensive play in the final seconds clearing the ball away from danger to help preserve the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
